We unintentionally celebrated Cinco de Mayo in style here in Ankara. I unthinkingly told my spouse how incredible Mexican sounded after our first day of our new intensive Turkish language class, and it was agreed upon that Mexican would be enjoyed by all. It was not until we sat down to dinner that I realized the sheer beauty of the coincidence unfolding before us! Our dinner menu was rounded out with traditional Mexican beans and rice, and, of course, my home-seasoned beef fajitas! YUM.
The panoramic views from our Ankara apartment are unbeatable in my book. No cover charge or outrageously expensive tea here. We simply walk out onto our terrace and can enjoy the sunshine, city sights (less city noises than Istanbul!), and the incredibly vibrant sunsets.
5 Mayis, as it is called here in Turkey, was fairly recognized around town and in the streets. Two different restaurants had signs wishing happy celebrations for Cinco de Mayo.
At the grocery store, I even got my cheeks pinched by an elderly büyükanne (grandmother, literally 'big mother') after I told her boś ver (oh nevermind it) after running into me with her shopping cart. She proceeded to ask if I was Iranian (the not usual 'where are you from?' I am used to). And when I said I was Californian, she then corrected and said: Meksikalı mısınız? Mayan? (Are you Mexican? Or Mayan?) I shook my head 'yes' to Mexican but was somewhat stunned with her follow-up Mayan question. She didn't mind and laughed heartedly, told me I was beautiful and a blessing, and walked away.
I will admit it: Ankara and its people are the real beautiful blessing this summer.
