I know I bake many a bread, but there is nothing like banana bread to remind an American expat of her childhood. With the scent of freshly baked banana bread, I'm immediately brought back to memories of growling bellies after an early morning mass, my grandmother's wrinkled, soft hands serving up slices of hot banana bread coupled with too-long chats about work, family, and the state of world affairs around a too-small dinner table.
It's incredible how some foods carry so much meaning with a mystical power that can bring back an onslaught of vivid, active memories. I am unable to enjoy banana bread with thinking of these childhood moments, and I am perfectly content with that! I'll have a second slice too, thanks.
